Auto Enrolment Overview

What is Auto Enrolment and why does it matter?

  • From October 2012, in accordance with the Pensions Act 2008 and subsequent regulations, every employer with workers who work in the UK, or who are ordinarily resident in the UK, will need to have a pension scheme in place.
  • It must be an appropriate pension scheme in accordance with the new rules, which many current schemes will not be without alteration.
  • The specific date for any particular employer depends on certain factors.
  • The employer will have to automatically enrol certain workers into a pension scheme and make contributions on their behalf.
  • Workers who are not enrolled will need to be regularly and frequently assessed (each pay period) to see if they must be enrolled at subsequent assessments.

These new employer duties are designed to encourage more people to save for their retirement. The requirements are detailed over many hundreds of pages and include a comprehensive compliance and enforcement section, which details serious sanctions on the employer for non-compliance.

By any measure the rules are complex. It is likely that all employers will benefit from expert support to guide them through Auto Enrolment, and to make sure their employer duties are fulfilled initially and can continue to be fulfilled.

CORPIAS has worked on Auto Enrolment since 2010, and so is a leader in this area. We have discussed the requirements and challenges with scores of employers and providers since then, and helped them understand their duties and how best to fulfil them. Employers should not believe Auto Enrolment is just a pensions issue or that their payroll system will do it all. For most companies, Auto Enrolment will affect all their employment processes from recruitment and employment contracts, across HR, payroll and finance, through to pensions at the end.

It doesn’t stop there: it is a continuous process every pay period, and is then re-energised every three years at the triennial auto re-enrolment date.

CORPIAS provides leadership and support for Auto Enrolment to ensure that it works for you, rather than the other way round. We help the employer to make the best decisions where the regulations are flexible, and help to ensure compliance can be achieved and continued in the most optimal way.
